The story behind how the song Broken Memories came about is one that is very touching to me.
Shaun had been approached by a group known as Missing Persons U.K. and Beyond, they had reached out to and asked if he would be able to write and perform a song for them. Shaun then contacted me and asked if it is something I would also like to get involved with.
At this point in time, I had a lot of things going on in my personal life and the request to get involved was probably the worst timing ever! I was putting together preparations for my wedding and I also had to organise moving my life from Scotland down to England.
Shaun was a previous student of mine and he had helped me numerous times with end of year shows at the school I was working at, so even though I had all this stuff going on I knew I had to help him, and I felt like I owed him one.
Growing up in Ayrshire I could remember several high-profile news stories of family members who had gone missing and the search continues to this day; Allan Bryant being one of them.
In my line of work, I have also worked with vulnerable young people and I know first-hand that some of these young people were also reported missing. Unfortunately, some of these young people, to date, have still not been found.
I do not personally have the experience of the torment of losing a family member or what the not knowing where they are would bring. I did however, on many occasions, have the anguish and worry of reporting a young person as missing in my care.
Thankfully, these young people were found with the help of police and other services.
Joan Grant is a woman who works endlessly for this cause and is truly an inspiration to me and should be to us all. I mention Joan as she had been my main point of contact, but I am fully aware that there are others who are equally hard working and have devoted their lives to supporting families in this situation.
Personally, I felt this was such an important cause and I wanted to do everything I could to help out, I put up a post on a music Facebook page that I’m involved with, asking for any song writers or music producers who could offer Shaun any support or advice.
It warmed my heart when I checked it later that day, there was loads of replies, Charlotte Elizabeth a song writer from Stoke-on-Trent offered a massive amount of valuable advice and didn't ask anything in return. Lucy Blu a singer/songwriter also offered her help; these are two fantastic people and if you have a spare moment, I would really recommend checking them out.
When I got home that night, I was sitting in my home and as if by magic words came flurrying to my mind and within a matter of about an hour or so, I had come up with two separate poems. Over the course of the next few days me and Shaun worked on the words and the music. We combined the two poems and before we knew it, we had come up with the song!
We then presented it to Joan, and she was happy with what we had come up with. It was all very exciting as things looked as if they were coming together on their own. I then approached Stevie Bull, a musician I had known from the Mojo Cams and a record producer at Ham and Egg Studio in Stevenston, Scotland. He took the song and created the recording that is now being used to generate funds for the Missing Persons U.K. and Beyond Charity.
I also owe a massive thanks to Jojo Lowely and her partner Andy who promoted and sold the song at her gigs. It has been an honour and pleasure to be able to be involved with this charity and I hope that the families affected can find some support and strength from its members, as they work every minute of every day to help you find your loved one.
I give full permission for The Missing Person and Beyond Charity to have the right to use this song to raise funds for their cause.
